A Real Steel series adaptation based on the 2011 Hugh Jackman-led film is in early stages of development at Disney+, according to Variety.

No writer is attached yet to the potential project, and further details about the plot of the series have not yet been released. The original film’s director Shawn Levy will produce through his 21 Laps production company. Robert Zemeckis and Jack Rapke also executive produce via Compari Entertainment, along with Jacqueline Levine, and Angry Films’ Susan Montford and Don Murphy.
Written by John Gatins from a story by Dan Gilroy and Jeremy Leven, and based on the short story Steel by Richard Matheson, the 2011 sci-fi sports drama is set in the near future where robot boxing is a top sport. Jackman plays Charlie Kenton who “used to be a prizefighter but lost his chance to win a title when heavy, towering robots took over the boxing ring. Now working as a small-time promoter, Charlie pieces together scrap metal into low-end fighters, barely earning enough to make it from one underground venue to the next. After hitting rock bottom, Charlie reluctantly teams with his estranged son, Max (Dakota Goyo), to build and train a championship robot for a last shot at redemption,” reads the film’s synopsis.

The Disney Branded Television series will be produced by 20th Television.
