Chinese Blockbuster Star Wu Jing Joins Warner Bros.’ Meg 2: The Trench

According to Variety, Chinese blockbuster superstar Wu Jing has been tapped to star opposite Jason Statham in Warner Bros. Pictures’ upcoming Meg 2: The Trench. It has also been confirmed that The Meg‘s female lead Li Bingbing won’t be reprising her 2018 role as Suyin in the action-thriller sequel.

Known as China’s highest-grossing actor of all time, Wu Jin is a former martial artist turned actor-director, who has appeared in a number of popular Chinese action films such as Wolf Warrior, Wolf  Warrior II, and The Wandering Earth. His most recent films, The Battle at Lake Changjin and The Battle at Lake Changjin II have a combined gross of over $1.4 billion at the Chinese box office.

The Meg 2: The Trench is being directed by Ben Wheatley (High-Rise) from a screenplay written by Jon and Erich Hoeber, based on the second novel in Steven Alten’s best-selling series of the same name. The sequel will feature returning cast members Jason Statham, Cliff Curtis, Sophia Cai, and Page Kennedy along with franchise newcomers, Sienna Guillory, Skyler Samuels, and Sergio Peris-Mencheta.

The sequel is once again being produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Belle Avery, with Catherine Ying, Li Ruigang, E. Bennett Walsh, Gerald Molen, and Randy Greenberg set as executive producers.

The 2018 film centered around the reemergence of a massive deep-sea creature called the Megalodon, a pre-historic 75-foot-long shark that was previously thought to be extinct. Even though it received mixed reviews from critics, it still became a box office success with a worldwide gross of over $530 million.
