The official title for Avatar 2 has been revealed ahead of its December 16, 2022, release date. James Cameron’s sequel will officially be called Avatar: The Way of Water. The trailer for the film will debut exclusively in theaters before airings of Doctor Strange 2.

“Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure,” says the official synopsis.
Additionally, 20th Century Studios is also rereleasing the original Avatar in theaters prior to the sequel. That will come on September 23, 2022, allowing fans to see the film in 3D once again.

Set after over a decade, Avatar 2 will follow the next chapter in the lives of Sam Worthington’s Jake and Zoe Saldana’s Neytiri as they have now become parents. Their family’s happy and peaceful life will get suddenly upended with the return of the RDA mining operations to Pandora, who in the first film, were defeated and sent back to Earth.
The cast of the Avatar franchise includes Kate Winslet, Edie Falco, Michelle Yeoh, Vin Diesel, Jemaine Clement, and Oona Chaplin alongside a slate of young actors. Returning cast members include Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Joel David Moore, Dileep Rao, Stephen Lang, Matt Gerald, and Sigourney Weaver.
The sequel is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 16, 2022
