New photos for TriStar Pictures’ forthcoming historical epic drama The Woman King have been revealed through Vanity Fair. It is currently scheduled to make its debut in theaters on September 16.

The Woman King images, which you can check out below, feature a new look at Oscar winner Viola Davis’ warrior character, as well as the first look at the rest of the main cast, including John Boyega and Lashana Lynch. In addition, an epic motion poster has also been released, teasing the release of its first trailer.
‘The Woman King’ tells the story of the Agoji, a real-life army of women warriors who defended the powerful West African kingdom of Dahomey for centuries—and whom history has largely forgotten.

Based on real-life events in the Kingdom of Dahomey in the 18th and 19th centuries, The Woman King tells the story of Nanisca (Davis), the General of the all-female military unit known as the Amazons, and her daughter Nawi, who together fought the French and neighboring tribes who violated their honor, enslaved their people, and threatened to destroy everything they’ve lived for.
Joining Davis are Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, John Boyega, Adrienne Warren, Jayme Lawson, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Sheila Atim, and more.

The Woman King is directed by The Old Guard filmmaker Gina Prince-Bythewood from a screenplay she co-wrote with Dana Stevens. It is being produced by Welle Entertainment’s Cathy Schulman with Davis and Julius Tennon and their JuVee Productions. Maria Bello of Jack Blue Productions is producing as well. Hannah Minghella and Nicole Brown will oversee for TriStar Pictures.
