Jordan Peele’s Nope took the top spot this weekend at the domestic box office, totaling $44 million from 3,785 theaters in its first week of release. While not as big of an opening as Us, which totaled $71 million in its first frame back in 2019 (and arrived hot on the heels of Get Out), Peele’s alien invasion horror/adventure still boasted solid numbers for an original IP, according to Deadline. With a relatively low $68 million price tag, Universal Studios will likely call this one a win. Imax accounted for 12% of Nope’s grosses, where the film earned $5.2 million from 400 screens. The pic doesn’t travel abroad until August.

Elsewhere, Thor: Love and Thunder raised its domestic total to $276.2 million after a $22.1 million (-53%) weekend. All told, the Marvel pic has earned $600 million worldwide, which should put a lot of those “the MCU is dead” arguments to rest for the time being. While Minions: The Rise of Gru has raked in $297.8 million domestically and a stellar $640 million globally.
Top Gun: Maverick continues to fly high. The Tom Cruise adventure collected an additional $10 million (-19%) domestically over the weekend for a $635.5 million total in the states, while its global tally has risen to a massive $1.282 billion. Worldwide, the action flick sits just behind Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom ($1.308 billion) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II ($1.328 billion, not adjusted for inflation); and has cracked the top 10 all-time domestic box office list, having surpassed The Last Jedi and The Avengers. Jurassic World ($652 million) and Titanic ($659 million, including re-releases) are in its sights; and now it’s a question of whether Maverick can take down Avengers: Infinity War ($678 million) and Black Panther ($700 million) in the coming weeks. Again, this is all without China.
Finally, Where the Crawdad Sings had a nice 40% hold in its second frame, earning $10.33 million to bring its total to $38.3 million.
