Bryce Dallas Howard has opened up about the expectations of Hollywood, with the actress recently revealing that she had been asked to lose weight prior to filming the 2022 film Jurassic World Dominion.
In an interview with Metro, Howard was asked about how her role in the film might be perceived in reference to representation for women everywhere. Howard then revealed that she had been asked to “not use” her natural body in various films, most recently Jurassic World Dominion.
“What being in this third film allowed, how do I say this, how do I say this, how do I say this…[I’ve] been asked to not use my natural body in cinema,” said Howard, before noting that executives pointed to the number of women cast in the film as a reason for asking her to lose weight. “On the third movie, it was actually because there were so many women cast, it was something that Colin felt very strongly about in terms of protecting me … because the conversation came up again, ‘We need to ask Bryce to lose weight.’”
Thankfully for Howard, director Colin Trevorrow was not one of the people clamoring for this change to occur and promptly rejected any calls for the actress to diet. Howard also noted that if she had been asked to lose weight, she likely would not have been able to safely accomplish the many stunts she actually performed in the film, and hopes the fact that she was able to do them shows other filmmakers what is possible with female actors.
“[Colin] was like, ‘There are lots of different kinds of women on this planet and there are lots of different kinds of women in our film’ and I got to do so many stunts that wouldn’t have been possible if I had been dieting,” said Howard. “So I’m really thrilled [at] all the action I got to do, and I got to do it with my body, she was at her maximum strength, and I hope it is just yet another indication of what’s possible.”
Jurassic World Dominion is available to stream now on Peacock, and will also be available via 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray on September 26, 2022.
