According to The Hollywood Reporter, Todd McFarlane’s long-in-development reboot of Spawn has officially tapped a trio of new writers, including Scott Silver (Joker), Malcolm Spellman (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier), and newcomer Matthew Mixon. They are set to pen the new script for the Blumhouse feature, which will be led by Jamie Foxx as the titular anti-hero.

“I grew up in Berkeley, which is a comic book city. Todd McFarlane’s Spawn character was always one of my favorites — a Black superhero that was no bullshit, he was cool and dealt with modern issues,” Spellman said in a statement. “Myself, Matt Mixon, and Scott Silver are pledged to honoring what Todd started and what Spawn is at its core, delivering something that’s relevant and edgy and unlike any other superhero movie out there.”
The Spawn movie has been in development since 2015. Comic book creator Todd McFarlane was previously attached to direct the film. However, he soon realized that he might not be the right person to bring the fan-favorite character to the big screen.
“If we’ve got an A-list actor, A-list producers, A-list writers, then do you want to shoot for A-list directors, A-list cinematographers?” McFarlane shared with the outlet. “The answer is, ‘of course.’ Let’s keep the momentum going.”
In addition to Jamie Foxx, Jeremy Renner has also been attached to play Twitch since 2018. It’s still unclear as to whether or not Renner is still part of the project.

First appearing in 1992’s Spawn #1, the character quickly became the symbol for 1990s comics’ dark and brutal antiheroes. His Hellspawn powers allow him to teleport, shapeshift, and utilize a variety of weapons (including chains) in combat. Spawn previously made the leap to the big screen in 1997 with Michael Jai White in the title role and then on television as an HBO animated miniseries titled Todd McFarlane’s Spawn. The character recently celebrated his 30th anniversary.
