Speaking to Deadline, Cavill spoke about how, even though your performance and reception might be good, you’re never fully in control of a role. With that in mind, Cavill said that he held onto the role of Superman “very gently” in his heart, because he wasn’t sure if he would get the chance to play him again.

“As an actor, you have to learn that there are things out of your control, no matter what you may think, no matter how your performance was, no matter what factors were not in your control in the first place, no matter how the audience feels,” Cavill said. “It was something which I had to very gently hold onto in my heart because I didn’t know whether I would have the opportunity to play it again … [But] the opportunity was very important to get again, and I’m very, very lucky and feel very privileged to have that opportunity now.”

Despite Cavill’s uncertainty over playing Superman again, the actor’s perseverance paid off, as he not only appeared in a cameo in the recently released Black Adam film but will also be playing Superman in the future as well.

Fans were excited to see Cavill show up after the animated credits of Black Adam, where he appears before Dwayne Johnson’s titular character at the behest of Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller. Johnson has spoken repeatedly about his desire to see the two titans battle, which now seems to be more of a possibility than ever,

Cavill previously appeared as Superman/Clark Kent in 2013’s Man of Steel, 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, 2017’s Justice League, and 2021’s Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Given the amount of time that has passed since Justice League, fans were uncertain as to whether Cavill was still set to play the Man of Steel, making this announcement a welcome surprise for DC fans.
