The John Wick franchise is set to expand with the upcoming John Wick: Chapter 4. However, according to director Chad Stahelski, he believes Keanu Reeves’ character will be taking a break afterward.
Speaking to THR, Stahelski revealed that both he and Keanu are “done” with the world of John Wick for now and would be giving the franchise a rest. The director did leave open the door for more movies to be made in the future, however.
“In our minds, Keanu and I are done for the moment,” said Stahelski. “We’re going to give John Wick a rest. I’m sure the studio has a plan. If everyone loves it and it goes kooky, then we’ll take a quiet minute. Wicks always, for some weird reason, always get the latest release date in Japan. It’s always like, three months later. If it’s the same this time, we’ll do a Japanese tour and release the movie in September. Keanu and I will take the long trip to Tokyo, we’ll sit in the Imperial Hotel Scotch Bar and go, ‘What do you think?’ We’ll have a couple 20-year-old whiskies and write some ideas on napkins. If those ideas stick, maybe we’ll make a movie.”
Stahelski and Reeves have been together in the world of John Wick for almost 10 years now, following the first film’s release in 2014. Even if Stahelski and Reeves are done with the film series for the time being, the world of John Wick is still continuing. Following John Wick: Chapter 4, a spin-off film titled Ballerina is set to release and will star Ana de Armas as well as several other John Wick mainstays.
John Wick: Chapter 4 is being directed by Chad Stahelski from a screenplay co-written by Shay Hatten and Michael Finch, who are taking over from franchise creator Derek Kolstad. It is produced by Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, and Stahelski, with Reeves and Louise Rosner set as executive producers. The film will arrive in theaters on March 24, 2023.
