According to The Hollywood Reporter, Village Roadshow is currently in the process of developing a modern remake of 1985’s romantic comedy dance movie Girls Just Want to Have Fun, with actress and director Elizabeth Banks attached as a producer.
The original film revolved around an army brat with a passion for dancing. After enrolling at an all-girls Catholic school, she meets a fellow dance enthusiast who encourages her to follow her dreams of joining her favorite dance competition show.
The Girls Just Want to Have Fun remake is being written by The L Word: Generation Q‘s showrunner Marja-Lewis Ryan and staff writer Allie Romano. Further details about the plot and characters are still being kept under wraps. However, the project aims to retain the original movie’s “celebration of female friendship, the humor and the heart, plus the dance numbers.”
The film will be executive produced by Alison Small for Brownstone Productions, along with Max Handelman as a producer. Jillian Apfelbaum, Tristen Tuckfield, and Nic Gordon have been tapped to oversee the project for Village Roadshow.
The 1985 cult classic was directed by Alan Metter. It starred then-rising stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Helen Hunt, and Shannen Doherty, along with Lee Montgomery, Jonathan Silverman, and Ed Lauter.
