Robert Englund will no longer play the iconic Freddy Krueger character in the Nightmare on Elm Street horror movie series.
Englund first played the iconic child killer in the 1984 slasher A Nightmare on Elm Street. He has gone on to play the character in seven Nightmare movies, and then in a Friday the 13th crossover spin-off called Freddy vs. Jason. He has also portrayed the character in a few TV series, most recently in a 2018 episode of The Goldbergs.
With the film rights reverting back to Wes Craven’s estate after the poorly received 2010 remake, some may want Englund to return to his famous character. However, Englund is no longer interested in playing the character in a full-length Nightmare on Elm Street film.
“I was in my 50s, and Freddy vs. Jason took a lot out of me,” Englund tells Insider, noting that he was “still doing a lot of my stunts.” He continues, “But I kind of knew I didn’t have a lot of stunt work left in me, or a lot of takes to physicalize it. And my torso had shifted, along with my face getting older, which doesn’t matter because I’m under all that crap — that makeup. But my torso… your weight shifts, and you get thicker as you get older. And I sort of lost Freddy’s silhouette.”
Englund says he “might have had another Freddy or two in me back in 2005 to 2010, but I don’t any longer. I would be honored if maybe they invited me to do a cameo.”

There has been no word yet on the next movie in the series.
