Oscar-winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is set to become the first woman to direct a Star Wars film with her upcoming project starring Daisy Ridley as Rey Skywalker. While speaking with CNN, Obaid-Chinoy briefly teased her historic Star Wars film.
“I’m very thrilled about the project because I feel what we’re about to create is something very special,” Obaid-Chinoy said. “And we’re in 2024 now, and it’s about time that we had a woman come forward to shape a story in a galaxy far, far away.”
What to Expect in Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s Star Wars Movie?
Obaid-Chinoy’s Star Wars film was announced during Lucasfilm’s Studio Showcase at Star Wars Celebration Europe 2023. Ridley returns as Rey, the role she portrayed in the sequel trilogy. The film will take place over a decade after the events in The Rise of Skywalker and focus on the New Jedi Order.
Obaid-Chinoy was revealed to be the director at the time of the announcement. Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson were set to pen the script. However, the duo exited the project in March 2023. Steven Knight was then hired to write the screenplay.
Obaid-Chinoy’s Star Wars film was initially expected to arrive in late 2025. However, the Hollywood strikes delayed the film, and the new release date will likely be in 2026, but Lucasfilm has not specified a release date. May 22, 2026, and December 18, 2026, are two dates on the Disney calendar held by Lucasfilm.
The last Star Wars film released in theaters was 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. The film grossed over $1 billion at the worldwide box office. However, The Rise of Skywalker was the lowest-growing film in the sequel trilogy and received mixed reviews from fans and critics.
