Kicking off the summer blockbuster season in 2024 will be The Fall Guy, the upcoming action comedy starring Ryan Gosling. Though the film has not had its world premiere, Gosling revealed that Steven Spielberg saw The Fall Guy and loved it. Spielberg enjoyed it so much that he approached Gosling at the Golden Globes and shared the good news.
“I saw Steven Spielberg walking in my direction,” Gosling told Variety about his encounter with Spielberg. “I don’t know Steven Spielberg. I thought there’s no way he’s coming to talk to me. And yet he kept getting closer, and then I thought I know what’s going to happen. I’m going to point to him, and he’s going to go, ‘Not you, behind you,’ so I’m not going to do that. Finally I said, ‘Me?’ and he goes, ‘Yeah you.’ I go, ‘I’m sorry I didn’t think you were coming to talk to me.’ And I stood up and he gave me a hug and said, ‘I just saw Fall Guy and I loved it.’”
Hearing those words from Spielberg meant the world to Gosling. Whether the film succeeds critically and financially is less important to the actor. The “Spielberg stamp of approval” was all he needed.
“As far as I’m concerned it doesn’t matter anymore what happens,” Gosling continued. “Steven Spielberg liked it. That was an all time moment for me. I’m really excited for people to see it. I think it’s a really special movie.”
What to Expect in The Fall Guy?
Ryan Gosling headlines The Fall Guy as Colt Seavers, an action choreographer tasked with finding a missing action star. The film is inspired by The Fall Guy television series from the 1980s by Glen A. Larson.
“He’s a stuntman, and like everyone in the stunt community, he gets blown up, shot, crashed, thrown through windows and dropped from the highest of heights, all for our entertainment,” the official synopsis reads. “And now, fresh off an almost career-ending accident, this working-class hero has to track down a missing movie star, solve a conspiracy and try to win back the love of his life while still doing his day job. What could possibly go right?”
Starring alongside Gosling is Emily Blunt as Jody Moreno, Colt’s ex-girlfriend and the director of the film he’s working on. The rest of the ensemble features Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Winston Duke, Hannah Waddingham, Teresa Palmer, and Stephanie Hsu.
The Fall Guy is directed by David Leitch from a screenplay by Drew Pearce. The Fall Guy is set to premiere at SXSW on March 12. It will then be released in theaters on May 3.
