It was announced earlier this month that Sydney Sweeney is set to star in a Christy Martin boxing movie. With the new movie reflecting the good and bad of the former boxer’s life, you may be wondering how Martin feels about the Anyone But You star taking on the big role. Christy Martin shares her reaction to Sweeney playing her as well as her involvement in the boxing movie.
Sydney Sweeney has taken part in heavy projects like Euphoria, Reality, and Immaculate. Her next project involves going to the mat as Christy Martin, the first female boxer elected to the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame in 2016. However, Martin was also the center of media attention when her husband tried to murder her in 2010.
As for how the real Christy Martin felt about Sweeney portraying her, here’s what she told TMZ:
“I think she is young, hot, talented and about to make a movie that in 20+ years, fathers will watch with their daughters to make them aware of domestic violence.”
Christy Martin would love to do a cameo for the upcoming biopic, but she’s already involved in another important way. She gets to be Sweeney’s lucky boxing trainer to championship prep her and work on her left hook.
How Does Sydney Sweeney Feel About Playing Christy Martin?
Just like Christy Martin can’t wait to see Sydney Sweeney throw jabs, the White Lotus actress felt the same way. In fact, she told Deadline why she’s excited to star in what producers are calling the “female Rocky” film.
“Christy Martin not only legitimized female boxing, she overcame gender stereotypes, and fought through emotional, physical, and financial abuse. I’m passionate about the fighting world, Christy’s story shines a light on her incredible rise to the top while showing the struggles of fame behind the curtains. I feel compelled to tell a story about a woman who faced so much adversity and didn’t allow it to defeat her. It’s powerful, and emotional.”
Believe it or not, Sydney Sweeney is not new to athleticism with her kickboxing background from the ages of 12-19. All the more reason why the Sharp Objects actress says she looks forward to getting back in the ring.
Not to mention, Sydney Sweeney also doesn’t want to back away the challenge of this physically and emotionally demanding role. For Sweeney’s first athletic role, it’ll be interesting to see what the real Christy Martin has taught the 26-year-old star.
