Snoop Dogg has been cast in Luc Besson’s new sci-fi movie, The Last Man.
Besson is known for making sci-fi movies such as 1997’s The Fifth Element, 2014’s Lucy, and 2017’s Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. His filmography also includes 1990’s La Femme Nikita, 1994’s Léon: The Professional, and more.
Now, per Variety, Besson will work with Snoop Dogg on a new movie called The Last Man, which is described as a Planet of the Apes-inspired movie that “may be connected” to Dogg’s 2009 song “Last Man Standing.”
What do we know about Luc Besson and Snoop Dogg’s The Last Man project?
Snoop Dogg previously said he was working on a Planet of the Apes-inspired project and hinted that it may be “dogs instead of apes” when speaking to Variety last month. Besson’s involvement was not known at the time.
Besson wrote the screenplay for The Last Man. He also produces alongside Dogg, Sara Ramaker, and Virginie Besson-Silla. Production is expected to begin in 2025.
Besson and Snoop Dogg previously worked together on an animated movie called Arthur and the Minimoys (known as Arthur and the Invisibles in the United States), which was directed by Besson and saw Dogg voice a character named Max.
“I’ve been a big fan of Snoop Dogg’s music ever since ‘Who Am I,’ We first met 20 years ago, and we’ve always wanted to work together again,” Besson said. “We just needed the right project that would excite us both — and this is it, with Snoop in the lead role. I can’t wait to get started!”
Snoop Dogg added, “Ever since I’ve seen The Professional, I’ve always wanted [Luc] to direct a whole movie for me. Now we finally get the opportunity for him to write and direct me in a Luc Besson movie.”
A release date for The Last Man has not yet been announced.
