This morning Jessica Alba, Megan Fox and Ed Helms announced the 2013 Golden Globe Award nominations in 25 categories and while it’s hard to be surprised by anything the Hollywood Foreign Press nominates, I have to say I didn’t expect to see three nominations for Salmon Fishing in the Yemen.
Life of Pi saw some love in both Best Picture (Drama) and Best Director (Ang Lee) while the likes of Tom Hooper (Les Miserables) and David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook) missed out in the Director category only to see their films nominated for Best Picture (Comedy/Musical).
The Actor categories weren’t much of a surprise outside of the nomination for Bill Murray in Hyde Park on Hudson, which is hardly receiving raves and to go with Murray over Omar Sy (The Intouchables) is just another piece of evidence of how much the HFPA loves celebrities.
Only surprise in the Actress category was Emily Blunt for Salmon Fishing for Actress (Comedy/Musical). My prediction was Leslie Mann (This is 40), but that fifth slot was a tough one for me. Admittedly, however, Blunt was never on my radar.
Nicole Kidman was nominated for the The Paperboy in the Best Supporting Actress category. Is there any chance she can sneak in for an Oscar?
I’m quite happy to see the love for Quentin Tarantino‘s Django Unchained, which was overlooked by the Screen Actors Guild yesterday morning as the film was nominated for Best Picture (Drama), Best Director, Best Screenplay and say both Leonardo DiCaprio and Christoph Waltz nominated for Best Supporting Actor.
Django along with Argo received five nominations each, but the big winner was Lincoln with seven nominations. On the television side it was “Game Change” that was the big nominee getter with five total nominations over four for “Homeland“. The Weinstein Co., big surprise, leads with 14 nominations, two of which being the Foreign Language nominees Kon-Tiki and The Intouchables.
Looking it over, my predictions weren’t too bad, and if anyone out there predicted those Salmon Fishing nominations head straight to Vegas right now!
I have included all of the nominees directly below and will be back later today with a closer evaluation of the noms and possibly some updated Oscar predictions. You can check out all my current predictions here.
The 2013 Golden Globe Awards will be broadcast live at 5:00-8:00 p.m. (PST)/8:00-11:00 p.m. EST on January 13, 2013. The festivities will be hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler and just like last year we will be here with a live blog and winners as always. If you’ve never tuned in for that, just click here to check out last year’s coverage.
