Did you know writer/director Uwe Boll directed around 30 movies in his career? I didn’t, and of those, the number of them I’ve seen I can count on one hand: 2007’s In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale and 2009’s Rampage. I didn’t even know he made a sequel to the latter, let alone had not one but two different crowdfunding efforts to complete his violent trilogy with Rampage 3: No Mercy. Turns out I wasn’t alone.
Boll’s most recent crowd-funding campaign on Kickstarter is still several thousands dollars away from his goal with only three days left (the Indigogo one before that fell $93,675 short of its $100,000 goal) and he’s not very happy about it. Not in the slightest, and he’s not afraid to call people out for not supporting his movie in two YouTube videos released yesterday.
He cusses out both fans who didn’t support this project but pay to see “Marvel Avengers bullshit dirt” and celebrities like George Clooney, Jennifer Lopez, Robert Downey Jr. and even Ben Kingsley, whom he worked with on Bloodrayne and here calls a “pussy,” for how they deceive the public.
“Basically, my message is fuck yourself,” he says among other things ranging from celebrities hitting on models at Cannes and wasting investors $10 million, and it is pure Boll fury. Remember, this is the guy who would rather get in a boxing ring with his critics than take their criticism to heart, and also asked Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avary to join him. They both said no, by the way.
There’s some hypocrisy in Boll complaining about how people spend their money while angry about people not giving him money, but that doesn’t make them any less fun to watch. Certainly they’re more entertaining than any movies he’s made thus far. And even though he denounces crowdfunding after his last failed efforts on this movie, and apparently Postal 2, I’d be more than willing to support a movie where he sits down for an hour-and-a-half in front of a camera and rants about Hollywood and whatever comes to his mind.
With three days to go in on the Kickstarter page, though, it looks like this is just a last-minute effort to rake in the dough so he can complete his third Rampage film, and so far it looks like it’s working. Well, sorta. The press isn’t hurting, at least.
The project’s picked up more steam since Boll’s YouTube rants, and if his cuss-filled videos gain more traction there’s a chance he may get the $55,794 he needs to make his latest sequel.
