The American Cinema Editors (ACE) have announced their nominations for the 62nd Annual ACE Eddie Awards for film, television, animated features and documentaries. Most of the films that have been in the discussion for Oscar nominations have received mentions including Michel Hazanavicius’ The Artist, Alexander Payne’s The Descendants, Martin Scorsese’s Hugo, Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris and others. As the group mentions in their press release, it’s been thirty years since a film won Best Picture at the Oscar without having an ACE Eddie nomination.
Because the editors’ guild splits the films into two categories, dramatic and comedy or musical, it doesn’t necessarily help us determine which movies will get a Best Picture nomination since we’re essentially looking at ten potential nominees. The most significant aspect of the nominations are what is missing from the nominations, including Tate Taylor’s The Help, Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life and Nicolas Refn’s Drive, the latter two being on the periphery and needing a boost from the technical branches of the Academy. The Help should still get a big boost from the acting branch, though, and the nomination for Paul Feig’s Bridesmaids (on top of SAG and PGA nominations) means that the raunchy comedy may have more industry support than some expect. Similarly, the nomination for the editing on Steven Spielberg’s War Horse helps what many felt was a film whose chances at the Oscars were waning.

American Cinema Editors (ACE) today announced nominations for the 62nd Annual ACE Eddie Awards recognizing outstanding editing in nine categories of film, television and documentaries. Winners will be revealed during ACEs 62nd annual black-tie awards ceremony on Saturday, February 18, 2012 in the International Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Hotel. As previously announced, the ceremony will be hosted by actor/comedian Patton Oswalt. Later this month ACE will announce the Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year honoree and two Career Achievement honorees.

Final Ballots will be mailed on January 23 and voting ends on February 9. The Blue Ribbon panels where judging for all television categories and the documentary film category take place January 29. Projects in the aforementioned categories are viewed and judged by panels comprised of professional editors (all ACE members). All 600+ ACE members vote during the final balloting of the ACE Eddies, including active members, life members, affiliate members and honorary members.
The ACE Eddie Awards is considered an integral precursor to the Oscars®. No film has won Best Picture at the Oscars® without also having received at least a Best Editing nomination since Ordinary People in 1981. Since the ACE membership boasts a very high crossover within its membership of Academy® members, it is considered a very accurate bellwether for the eventual Oscar® outcome.
