O’Brien portrays a young man living a seemingly ordinary life when he starts remembering Cindy, a former classmate played by Maika Monroe (It Follows), who vanished in high school. After he reaches out to old friends about his horrific visions they rediscover Mercury, a mystery drug they took when they were young around the time Cindy went missing. Fitzel realizes the only way to uncover what happened might be taking another terrifying trip on the drug to remember what happened to the girl who got away. Deep in his memories lies the truth. The mental odyssey and mind-twisting thriller also stars Hannah Gross (Joker) and Emory Cohen (Brooklyn). The film was originally titled The Education of Frederick Fitzel.
“The film doesn’t fit into any easy to describe genre box. It’s part psychological thriller, part drama, part horror, part coming-of-age story,” writer-director Christopher MacBride said. “I think it makes people uneasy when they can’t figure out what label to slap on something… But those are the kind of movies I like. When you can’t find a label for something, it’s usually because it’s something original.”
