Netflix has revealed the official trailer for Oscar-winning filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino’s coming-of-age Italian drama film titled The Hand of God, starring Filippo Scotti. Chosen as Italy’s official submission for International Feature Film at the 94th Academy Awards, the film is slated to arrive in select theaters on December 3, followed by its streaming debut on December 15.
The Hand of God trailer, which you can check out below, provides us a glimpse into a young boy’s seemingly blissful life in Naples during the 1980s. However, things will suddenly change as he tries to endure a heartbreaking tragedy that will alter the course of his life.

The Hand of God is written and directed by Paolo Sorrentino, who returns to his hometown to tell his most personal story, a tale of fate and family, sports and cinema, love and loss. It is produced by Sorrentino and Lorenzo Mieli through their The Apartment Pictures banner, with Elena Recchia, Gennaro Formisano, Riccardo Neri executive producing.
“It tells the story of a boy, Fabietto Schisa, in the tumultuous Naples of the 1980s,” reads the synopsis. “The film is a story full of unexpected joys, such as the arrival of football legend Diego Maradona, and an equally unexpected tragedy. Fate plays its part, joy and tragedy intertwine, and Fabietto’s future is set in motion.”
The film stars Filippo Scotti, Toni Servillo, Teresa Saponangelo, Renato Carpentieri, Marlon Joubert, Luisa Ranieri, Massimiliano Gallo, Biagio Manna, Betti Pedrazzi, Ciro Capano, Enzo Decaro, Lino Musella, and Sofya Gershevich.

The Hand of God had its world premiere last September at the 2021 Venice International Film Festival, where it took home two awards including the Grand Jury Prize and Marcello Mastroianni for Scotti’s leading performance as Fabietto Schisa.
Sorrentino gained international recognition for the 2013 film The Great Beauty which had earned him numerous awards including an Academy Award and a Golden Globe award for Best Foreign Language Film. He then went on to produce his first Italian-English language miniseries The Young Pope which premiered on HBO in 2016. Sorrentino has also signed on to direct the film adaptation of Mob Girl with Jennifer Lawrence attached for the leading role.
