HBO has released the official trailer for Barry Levinson’s upcoming biographical drama The Survivor, starring Ben Foster and Danny DeVito. The film had its world premiere last year at the Toronto International Film Festival, and is now scheduled to make its HBO debut on Wednesday, April 27.
The Survivor trailer features an Auschwitz survivor that later became a professional boxer in America. He challenges a famous boxer into a match in hopes of getting the media coverage he needs to let his girlfriend back home know that he’s alive. The video also highlights the horrific things he had to do survive including being forced into a deathmatch against fellow prisoners.

The film is directed by Oscar-winner Barry Levinson from a script written by Justine Juel Gillmer, based on Alan Haft’s book titled Harry Haft: Survivor of Auschwitz, Challenger of Rocky Marciano. It recounts the story of real-life Auschwitz survivor Harry Haft, while also examining his journey from unspeakable horrors to freedom, forgiveness, and redemption.
“The Survivor centers around Harry Haft, who, after being sent to Auschwitz, survives not only the unspeakable horrors of the camp, but the gladiatorial boxing spectacle he is forced to perform with his fellow prisoners for the amusement of his captors,” reads the synopsis. “Unbeknownst to those who try to destroy him, Haft’s will to survive is driven by his quest to reunite with the woman he loves.”
The HBO drama film stars Ben Foster (3:10 to Yuma), Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread), Billy Magnussen (No Time to Die), Peter Sarsgaard (Jackie), Saro Emirze (Wilsberg), Dar Zuzovsky (Hostages), Danny DeVito (Taxi), and John Leguizamo (To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar).
