What is Eileen about?
“Set during a bitter 1964 Massachusetts winter, young secretary Eileen becomes enchanted by the glamorous new counselor at the prison where she works,” the official synopsis reads. “Their budding friendship takes a twisted turn when Rebecca reveals a dark secret — throwing Eileen onto a sinister path.”
Eileen is written by Ottessa Moshfegh and Luke Goebel. Oldroyd, Goebel, Moshfegh, Anthony Bregman, Stefanie Azpiazu, and Peter Cron serve as producers.
In 2016, Oldroyd made Lady Macbeth, a British period piece starring Florence Pugh that was well-received by critics. Eileen marks his first feature film since Lady Macbeth; although, he’s also made a number of short films, such as 2014’s Best, 2013’s In Mid Wickedness, and 2011’s Christ’s Dog.
McKenzie is known for starring in Leave No Trace (2018), Jojo Rabbit (2019), Old (2021), Last Night in Soho (2021), and The Power of the Dog (2021). Hathway, meanwhile, recently starred alongside Peter Dinklage and Marisa Tomei in Rebecca Miller’s She Came to Me, which is currently playing in theaters.
Eileen also stars Shea Whigham (Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, The Righteous Gemstones), Siobhan Fallon Hogan (Men in Black, Wayward Pines), and Owen Teague (It, The Stand).
Eileen releases in New York City and Los Angeles theaters on December 1, 2023, before going nationwide on December 8.
