Watch: Trailer for Chile’s Foreign Language Oscar Contender, ‘No’ Starring Gael Garcia Bernal

I missed the first screening of Pablo Larrain‘s No at Cannes earlier this year and the subsequent screenings I would have been able to attend were all being presented without subtitles. Buzz surrounding the film was high, though, and Sony Classics snatched it up. I then missed it when it played in Toronto, though I did catch a photo session with star Gael Garcia Bernal as onlooking female fans were nearly fainting at his feet.

I will, however, be seeing it this Thursday as it will be the final film I will screen in theaters for 2012 and from what I hear it will be well worth the trip.

No is set in 1988, when Chilean military dictator Augusto Pinochet, due to international pressure, is forced to call a plebiscite on his presidency. The country will vote “Yes” or “No” to Pinochet extending his rule for another eight years. Opposition leaders for the NO persuade a brash, young advertising executive, Rene Saavedra (Bernal), to spearhead their campaign. Against all odds, with scant resources and under the scrutiny of the despot’s minions, Saavedra and his team devise an audacious plan to win the election and set Chile free.

No was submitted as Chile’s official selection for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2013 Oscars and it will hit limited theaters in February 2013.
