Final Moments on Oxygen chronicles Brittney Gargol’s 2015 murder case that was solved using a selfie. The upcoming episode, titled “The Missing Clue,” will air on the channel this Sunday, November 12, 2023, at 7 p.m. ET.
The official synopsis for the episode says, “After overcoming a troubled childhood, Brittney Gargol is on a path to a bright future; when the Canadian high school senior is found murdered by the side of a desolate road, a surprising clue leads to an arrest.”
According to CNN, on March 24, 2015, Brittney Gargol headed out with her friend Cheyenne Antoine after posting a selfie on Facebook. Hours later, 18-year-old Gargol was found dead on a roadside in Saskatchewan, Canada.
Two years later, in 2017, police arrested Antoine after identifying the belt she wore that night as the murder weapon. They found the clue in the same selfie they posted that night before heading out. The suspect eventually confessed to the murder and pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
Brittney Gargol murder: What was the murder weapon & how was it linked to the crime?
Police in Saskatchewan, Canada, used a selfie that Brittney Gargol and Cheyenne Antoine posted on the evening of March 24, 2025, to solve the former’s murder. Guardian reported that both girls headed out for the night, but Gargol was found murdered hours later. The killer strangled her to death using a belt.
The outlet reported that authorities subsequently noticed that Antoine was wearing the same belt in the selfie they posted that night. They named her a primary suspect in the case. Police also received a tip, which led them to a witness who claimed that Antoine had admitted to strangling Gargol.
CNN reported that, as per the confession, Antoine and Gargol went to a house party that night. The girls then got into an argument while intoxicated when the former strangled her friend with the belt and dumped the body along with the murder weapon.
The outlet stated that police also matched the webbed belt to some marks left on Gargol’s car. “[The car] was dirty and it had dust, and you could see on the side of the car. You could see marks, and the marks were consistent with that black belt. And it also looked like there was a struggle,” said prosecutor Robin Ritter.
Police reportedly questioned Antoine about the death, but the then-18-year-old “manufactured evidence and false statements to police. She told police they went out drinking and met up with a white male.” However, the suspect’s uncle later told police that she had asked him to lie to the police, saying, “two black men” killed her friend.
Cheyenne Antoine’s arrest came two years later, in March 2017. She initially faced a second-degree murder charge but pleaded guilty to manslaughter. Ritter told CNN, “Seven years… is in the range of sentences for manslaughter. In that, it strikes an appropriate balance between the need to protect society and the need to rehabilitate offenders.”
