Netflix's The Witcher Will Never Adapt the Video Games, Says Showrunner

Comic-Con: The Witcher Will Never Adapt the Video Games, Says Showrunner

Before it became an acclaimed series of RPG video games from CD Projekt Red, The Witcher was a series of eight novels written by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski and with Netflix hoping the upcoming series adaptation of the books could be their own Game of Thrones, there runs the chance that they will run out of material to base their work on, however showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich says should this time come, they will not turn to the games, according to The Wrap.

“Extreme long vision is no, we will not start adapting the games,” Hissrichsaid during a press round table at San Diego Comic-Con. “I can only attack one season at a time, I’m so excited for this one, the rest kind of makes my mind explode right now. If someone says ‘what happens in Season 7,’ sure I have thoughts. Fingers crossed, we get there.”

The acclaimed and bestselling trilogy of games from CD Projekt Red acts as a sequel to the novels following Geralt of Rivia as he continues his monster hunting journey and finds himself wrapped up in major world events.

Based on the best-selling fantasy series, The Witcher is an epic tale of fate and family. Geralt of Rivia, a solitary monster hunter, struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts. But when destiny hurtles him toward a powerful sorceress, and a young princess with a dangerous secret, the three must learn to navigate the increasingly volatile Continent together.

The series stars Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, 17-year-old Allan as Ciri, Chalotra as Yennefer, Jodhi May as Queen Calanthe, Mimi Ndiweni as fledgling sorceress Fringilla, Sabrina as Therica Wilson-Read, Millie Brady as outcast Princess Renfri, Adam Levy as the druid Mousesack, Björn Hlynur Haraldsson as Queen Calanthe’s husband, the knight Eist and MyAnna Buring as Tissaia, head of the magical academy.

The Witcher series for Netflix will be based on the stories and novels by Andrzej Sapkowski, of which there are eight, which themselves formulated the popular Witcher games franchise which has since spawned a comic book series and a tabletop game. The book series was previously adapted for television in Poland.
