Just four months after the animated series debuted to a critical lashing on the streaming platform, Netflix has elected to cancel the Jake Johnson (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse)-starring comedy Hoops after just one season, according to Variety.

Though Netflix rarely shares their viewership numbers for their content, sources report that the streaming service reviews its viewership and compared the numbers to the money it took to finance the first season and chose to pass on renewing it for another season. The series’ negative reviews from critics and fans alike also most likely helped fuel the decision, with the general consensus being that the series tried hard to throw countless jokes at the bucket with nothing landing.
Created by Ben Hoffman, Hoops was an animated comedy sitcom that centers on a hot-headed, foul-mouthed high school basketball coach who thinks turning around his god awful team will take him to the “big leagues” and turn his miserable life around. The series was led by Johnson, who lent his voice to Coach Ben Hopkins, who was described as a pathetic, angry, foul-mouthed coach desperate to prove himself, but always looking for an easy way to get the job done.
Joining Johnson were Rob Riggle as Barry Hopkins, Natasha Leggero as Shannon, Ron Funches as Ron, Cleo King as Opal, and A.D. Miles as Matt. It also featured the voices of Nick Swardson, Gil Ozeri, Max Greenfield, Steve Berg, and Sam Richardson.

Hoops was executive produced by Hoffman and Johnson along with Seth Cohen, M. Dickson, Phil Lord, and Chris Miller. This marked Johnson’s latest collaboration with creator Ben Hoffman, who worked together on the sitcom New Girl.
