Hilary Duff took to Instagram to confirm that production of the long-awaited Lizzie McGuire revival series has been officially cancelled and is no longer moving forward at Disney+ due to creative differences between the series’ creative team and Disney. This cancellation also comes after original series creator Terri Minsky decided to exit the project after already filming the first two episodes.
“I’ve been so honored to have the character of Lizzie in my life,” Duff said in her statement. “She has made such a lasting impression on many, including myself. To see the fans’ loyalty and love for her, to this day, means so much to me. I know the efforts and conversations have been everywhere trying to make a reboot work but, sadly & despite everyone’s best efforts, it isn’t going to happen. I want any reboot of Lizzie to be honest and authentic to who Lizzie would be today. It’s what the character deserves. We can all take a moment to mourn the amazing woman she would have been and the adventures we would have taken with her. I’m very sad, but I promise everyone tried their best and the stars just didn’t align. Hey now, this is what 2020s made of.”

The Lizzie McGuire revival series was supposed to continue to follow the story of Lizzie McGuire, who is just about to turn 30. She seemingly has it all – her dream job as an assistant to a fancy New York City decorator, her dream guy and a picturesque Brooklyn apartment – but things aren’t always as they seem. With a little help from her friends, her loving family and her 13-year-old alter-ego in animated form, Lizzie navigates the ups and downs of adulthood.
The series was supposed to featuring the reunion of the entire McGuire family with Jake Thomas, Hallie Todd and Robert Carradine reprising their roles as Matt, Jo and Sam, respectively. Adam Lamberg was also previously expected to reprise his role as Gordo. Original series creator Terri Minsky was also previously attached as the revival’s showrunner.

The Disney Channel series ran on-air for two seasons from 2001-2004, and also had the theatrical The Lizzie McGuire Movie starring Duff, which grossed $55 million at the global box office. It is still recognized as one of Disney Channel’s most iconic teen sitcoms of all time.
