As production continues on the upcoming eleventh season of The Walking Dead, a new behind-the-scenes photo from the Atlanta set of the final installment of AMC’s hit horror drama has surfaced online (via Twitter). The new set photo provides us our first look at series newcomer Michael James Shaw (Constantine) as Mercer in the fan-favorite character’s comic-accurate signature red armor. The series is scheduled to make its return this year on August 22.

In The Walking Dead comics, Mercer was first introduced as a leader of the Commonwealth military, who has prior experience in the U.S. Marine corps. The character is also known as the romantic interest to Juanita, a.k.a Princess, who is being portrayed by Paola Lázaro in the series.

The series currently stars Norman Reedus, Melissa McBride, Lauren Cohan, Cailey Fleming, Josh McDermitt, Christian Serratos, Seth Gilliam, Ross Marquand, Khary Payton, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. It also features Nadia Hilker, Lauren Ridloff, Cooper Andrews, Callan McAuliffe, Eleanor Matsuura, and Cassady McClincy. Season 11 will consist of 24 episodes which will also introduce new cast members Margot Bingham as Stephanie and Michael James Shaw as Mercer.

Based on Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard’s comic series of the same name, The Walking Dead is executive produced by Kirkman, Scott M. Gimple, Greg Nicotero, David Alpert, Joseph Incaprera, Gale Anne Hurd, Denise Huth, and Angela Kang, who is returning as the showrunner for the final installment.
