In a statement from Peter Morgan — who created the Netflix series and also wrote the 2006 film The Queen starring Helen Mirren — the director called The Crown “a love letter” to the Queen and said that he expects production to stop filming for a period of time following the news.
“The Crown is a love letter to her and I’ve nothing to add, for now, just silence and respect,” said Morgan in his brief statement. “I expect we will stop filming out of respect too.”
Not too much is known about the upcoming sixth and final season of The Crown, but early reports suggest that the season will cover the 1990s to the early 2000s era of British royalty. The Crown‘s sixth season will star Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II, Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret, Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip, Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana, Dominic West as Prince Charles, and Jonny Lee Miller as John Major.
