Shantaram has had a lukewarm response from the critics with a 55% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience, however, seems to have liked what they have seen so far. Viewers have given it an approval rating of 86%.
Vicky Jessop from London Evening Standard remarks, “As gorgeous and frenetic as it is, this is a show that needs some fine-tuning. However, it still manages to make its premise feel fresh and interesting: stick with it, and you may just be rewarded.”
Dan Einav from Financial Times says, “This tale of a fallen man’s attempt to find both himself and redemption in various “exotic” lands has little self-awareness and few redeeming qualities.”
