The Idol Cancellation Claims Disputed by HBO

Will The Idol return for a second season? Earlier this week, Page Six reported The Idol’s star, Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye, was not planning a second season of the divisive series. However, HBO has come out and disputed the cancellation claims, tweeting via HBO PR that a decision has not been made on The Idol’s second season.

Who is Involved in The Idol?

The Idol stars Lily-Rose Depp as Jocelyn, a rising pop star looking to regain the fame she lost after canceling her previous tour. Amid her comeback, Jocelyn meets Tedros (Tesfaye), a mysterious figure who quickly infiltrates her life, romantically and creatively.

“After a nervous breakdown derailed Jocelyn’s (Lily-Rose Depp) last tour, she’s determined to claim her rightful status as the greatest and sexiest pop star in America,” the official synopsis reads. “Her passions are reignited by Tedros (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye), a nightclub impresario with a sordid past. Will her romantic awakening take her to glorious new heights or the deepest and darkest depths of her soul?

The Idol is co-created by Tesfaye, Reza Fahim, and Euphoria’s Sam Levinson. The ensemble cast features Suzanna Son, Troye Sivan, Jane Adams, Rachel Sennott, Hari Nef, Moses Sumney, Jennie Ruby Jane, Dan Levy, Eli Roth, Ramsey, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and Hank Azaria.

After a splashy premiere at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, The Idol received many negative reviews, with most critics panning the series. The disturbing sexual content and overall themes of The Idol have been the driving factors behind the criticism.

Tesfaye, Fahim, and Levinson executive produce alongside Joe Epstein, Ashley Levinson, Nick Hall, Kevin Turen, Aaron Gilbert, and Sara E. White. The Idol is an A24 production. The third episode of The Idol airs Sunday, June 18, at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and Max.
