Baywatch is getting a new reboot from Fox.
Per Variety, Fox and Fremantle have finalized a deal to create a new reboot series of Baywatch. The show will be helmed by showrunner Lara Olsen, who will also serve as an executive producer alongside Gregory J. Bonann and Douglas Schwartz.
What is the Baywatch reboot about?
“Daring ocean rescues, pristine beaches, and iconic red bathing suits are back, along with a whole new generation of Baywatch lifeguards, who navigate complicated, messy personal lives in this action-packed reboot that demonstrates there’s the family you’re born into and the family you find,” the official logline reads.
Created by Michael Berk, Schwartz, and Bonnan, Baywatch premiered on NBC in September 1989. The series was not a hit, which then caused NBC to cancel the show after one season; however, it was revived in 1991.
Baywatch went on for a total of 11 seasons. It led to a spin-off series, Baywatch Nights, and three direct-to-video movies: 1995’s Baywatch the Movie: Forbidden Paradise, 1998’s Baywatch: White Thunder at Glacier Bay, and 2003’s Baywatch: Hawaiian Wedding.
The series starred David Hasselhoff as Mitch Buchannon, Parker Stevenson as Craig Pomeroy, Shawn Weatherly as Jill Riley, Billy Warlock as Eddie Kramer, Pamela Anderson as C. J. Parker, Erika Eleniak as Shauni McClain, Peter Phelps as Trevor Cole, Brandon Call as Hobie Buchannon, and Holly Gagnier as Gina Pomeroy.
In 2017, director Seth Gordon rebooted Baywatch into a feature-length movie starring Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario, and Priyanka Chopra. The movie received mostly negative reviews from critics and fans; however, it was considered to be a financial success, as it brought in $177.9 million at the worldwide box office off an estimated budget of $65-69 million.
A premiere date for the new Baywatch reboot hasn’t been announced yet by Fox and Fremantle.
