Disney+ has released the official trailer for the upcoming second season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, which is scheduled to make its return on Friday, May 14. The video features the East High Wildcats drama students as they prepare for their Spring musical. However, instead of doing High School Musical 2, Miss Jenn’s competitive side awakens when she meets Derek Hough’s Zack, leading her to enter the drama club in their first-ever statewide competition. The Season 2 trailer also previews some of the new musical numbers as well as a snippet of the series’ new original song. It also highlights Nini and Ricky’s relationship which will again be tested when Nini must transfer to a new school.

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is a mockumentary musical teen drama which follows a group of students at East High who stage a performance of High School Musical for their winter theater production, only to realize that as much drama is also happening offstage. Each episode of Season 1 featured new songs and new renditions of iconic songs from the first film such as “Start of Something New”, “All in this Together” and “Breaking Free”.
In Season 2, the East High Wildcats, who are preparing to perform “Beauty and the Beast” as their spring musical, face off against rival school North High to win a prestigious and cutthroat student theater competition. Wigs are snatched, loyalties are tested, and ballads are belted. The season also features brand-new solos. The new season is expected to still be covering songs from the High School Musical movies while also continuing to showcase new original songs including new solos written by Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett.
The series stars Olivia Rodrigo as Nini, Joshua Bassett as Ricky, Matt Cornett as E.J., Sofia Wylie as Gina, Larry Saperstein as Big Red, Julia Lester as Ashlyn, Dara Renee as Kourtney, Frankie Rodriguez as Carlos and Joe Serafini as Seb. Season 2 will feature guest-stars Derek Hough, Olivia Rose Keegan, Roman Banks, Andrew Barth Feldman and Asher Angel.

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is executive produced by Tim Federle (Ferdinand) and Oliver Goldstick (Pretty Little Liars) along with the original film’s EPs Bill Borden and Barry Rosenbush.
The first High School Musical film aired in 2006 at the Disney channel which launched the careers of Zac Efron (The Greatest Showman, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile), Vanessa Hudgens (Dog Days) and Ashley Tisdale (Charming) giving them worldwide recognition. The last film titled High School Musical 3: Senior Year was released ten years ago.
