The recent WWE Holiday Tour live event featured a huge steel cage matchup between CM Punk and Gunther. The highly anticipated match took place at the Allstate Arena in Chicago, Illinois, for the World Heavyweight Championship. Gunther recently retained his World Heavyweight Championship at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event. He successfully defended his title against Damian Priest and Finn Balor in a triple-threat match, pinning Balor to secure the win.
Meanwhile, Punk has been locked in a heated rivalry with Seth Rollin. Now, the two stars are set to collide next week on the WWE Raw Netflix debut episode. Amid these developments, Punk challenged Gunther for the World Heavyweight Championship at a recent WWE live event.
The WWE Holiday Tour, which spanned several cities, featured Punk being advertised for the shows. He competed in several matches, facing Ludwig Kaiser twice and teaming up with Rey Mysterio in a tag match against The New Day. Punk emerged victorious in these bouts, but he suffered a shocking defeat in his final match of the tour against Gunther.
However, the dream match took an unexpected turn due to an interruption. The matchup between Punk and Gunther was disrupted by none other than Dominik Mysterio, who cost Punk the opportunity to win the World Heavyweight Championship.
Dominik Mysterio’s interference costs CM Punk the victory
CM Punk, who had previously attacked Dominik Mysterio during the WWE Holiday Tour, received a taste of his own medicine in his match against Gunther. In the final moments of the match, Punk attempted to exit the steel cage. However, Dominik Mysterio slammed the door in his face. Mysterio then assisted Gunther in escaping the steel cage, allowing him to retain his title.
After the match, chaos broke out as Dominik Mysterio unleashed a post-match beatdown on Punk. Moreover, he was joined by Kofi Kingston, Carlito, and Xavier Woods. But, CM Punk had some reinforcements as Rey Mysterio, Otis, and LA Knight came to his aid.
